FAQs

The name derives from the Danish word “Tang”, meaning “kelp”. Tangled Greens has been growing sugar kelp and winged kelp on ropes off the west coast of Scotland since January 2021. We are at the beginning of an adventure to bring delicious and nutritious brown kelp food to your plate and a nourishing liquid plant feed to your gardens.

Brown kelp is a type of seaweed (or macroalgae) which grows all over the world naturally. It has such a diverse range of uses in food, agriculture, cosmetics, health, pharmaceuticals and biotechnology. Our cultivated sugar kelp and winged kelp can grow up to three metres and are loaded with minerals and nutrients.

Yes, brown kelps are full of nutrients and vitamins which are essential to maintaining a balanced, healthy diet. Brown kelp contains iodine, carbohydrates, fibre, folic acid, antioxidants, potassium and protein. It is useful as a source of amino acids, calcium and omega 3, which can be particularly important for those on vegetarian and vegan diets. However, if you have any concerns please consult your doctor before introducing brown kelp into your diet.

It means we grow it ourselves! You can hand harvest seaweed at low tide, or you can wild harvest from natural kelp forests. We have chosen to cultivate our brown kelp on ropes which we have seeded to offer people and businesses a more sustainable alternative to help preserve important marine ecosystems which are doing such an important job of sucking in carbon, cleaning the ocean and providing a home for all the wee sea dwellers.

We go out to sea twice a week during the spring to harvest small batches of delicious young fronds. These are processed and packaged in line with Food Safety Standards. Our kelp goes through a three-step rinsing process, where each frond is meticulously checked by hand. It is then sealed and placed in refrigerated packaging for onward transport to our restaurant and food distribution partners. Our brown kelp is gluten free. It is keenly cleaned and scrutinised, however it is a marine plant and may contain small traces of fish, shellfish or molluscs. If you have an allergy or any concerns please get in contact or speak with your doctor before consuming or handling kelp products.

Once we bring our brown kelp ashore it is rinsed and sorted for food and fertilisers. It is then put into big tanks where it is cold pressed and passed through our unique triple-stage filtration system to make a liquid biostimulant, with zero energy required. Kelp is packed full of micro and macronutrients, as well as a unique range of growth hormones and bioactive compounds that stimulate natural plant growth processes. These help to improve the plant's overall health, resilience to disease and resistance to abiotic stressors like heat, frost and drought.
